SOMTU Students Protest Against Free Student Union Interference

Kathmandu : Students of the School of Management, Tribhuvan University (SOMTU) have strongly opposed the recent decision to introduce Free Student Union (FSU) elections within their institution.
They argue that the move threatens the academic integrity and politically neutral environment of the school, which has remained free from political influence for the past 13 years.

The decision, made by the Vice-Chancellor and Rector without prior consultation with students, has sparked concern among the SOMTU community. Students claim that since the announcement, FSU representatives have disrupted academic activities, interfered in classrooms, and attempted to establish a political presence within the school.

In response, more than 80% of students listed as voters at SOMTU have signed a petition opposing political interference. The petition has been submitted to key authorities at SOMTU, the Faculty of Management (FOM), and Tribhuvan University. The students firmly believe that politics has no place in an institution dedicated to academic excellence, leadership, and professionalism.

The students have now launched a peaceful protest, urging university officials to revoke the decision and maintain SOMTU’s politically neutral academic environment. They are calling on the administration to respect the voice of the majority and uphold the institution’s integrity.

Key Demands:
Revoke the "voting rights" imposed on SOMTU students.

Prevent further FSU interference to safeguard the professional academic environment.
