Photo Feature: Protesting teachers stage sit-in at Nepali Congress headquarters

Kathmandu, March 11 — The Nepal Teachers' Federation has started the second phase of its protest by staging sit-ins at the headquarters of political parties.

Today, they held a demonstration at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa.

On the last day of the first phase, teachers and school staff gathered at Maitighar Mandala for a large protest.

During the second phase, the Federation will also stage protests at the offices of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) in the coming days.

The Federation had completed the first phase of the protest on March 8, and announced the second phase starting from March 11.

From March 11 to March 18, the Federation plans to hold symbolic protests at the central offices of major political parties.

On March 12, the CPN (UML) office will be gheraoed, followed by the CPN (Maoist Center) on March 14, CPN (Unified Socialist) on March 15, Rashtriya Swatantra Party on March 16, and the offices of Janata Samajwadi Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, and Rashtriya Janamorcha on March 16.

On March 17, they will also protest at the offices of Janamat, Nagarik Unmukti, and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party.

The Federation has been demanding the passing of the delayed school education bill, which has been held up for a long time.

The teachers claim that the delay in the bill is hurting the education system and that the government has failed to honor previous agreements made with the teachers' unions.

The school education bill is currently under discussion in Parliament’s Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee, but the Federation accuses the government of failing to prioritize and advance the bill.
