Deuba advocates for constitutional amendments with broad political consensus
Kathmandu, January 31 — Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba stated that whether it is for the implementation of the constitution or for other matters, it is this parliament that will make the laws.
He emphasized that all bills in parliament should be passed, and expressed his party's firm commitment to implementing the seven-point agreement made between the Congress and the CPN (UML), with the belief that all parties will cooperate in this process.
Addressing the winter session of the House of Representatives, Deuba said that the main objective of the government is to strengthen the country's economic situation. He remarked that a six-month period is insufficient to evaluate any government, but he personally feels the government has made good progress. However, he also pointed out that some developmental works have not progressed as expected.
Regarding economic reforms, Deuba mentioned that the government has introduced some laws through ordinances, which he believes will ensure good governance, address the issues of squatters, and improve the cooperative sector. He expressed confidence that these ordinances will be passed in this parliament and urged the government to promptly pass the necessary laws.
Deuba reiterated that the fundamental principle of democracy is the rule of law, and thus, there should be no delay in making the necessary laws. He also suggested bringing additional bills that address the concerns of the people.
On constitutional amendments, Deuba said that while there may be a need to amend the constitution, any changes should not weaken the foundational principles of the constitution, such as multi-party democracy, federalism, and inclusivity. He advocated for consulting with all political parties before making any constitutional amendments.
