In pictures: Tharu community celebrates Maghi in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, January 14 — On the occasion of Maghi, the Tharu community in Kathmandu organized a procession with traditional costumes and dances.

Gathering at Basantapur, members of the Tharu community marched to Tundikhel, dancing and singing along the way.

Participants in the rally extended their Maghi greetings through songs and dances. During the Maghi festival, it is customary in Kathmandu to invite relatives and share festive food while exchanging well wishes.

Maghi coincides with the Makar Sankranti, the moment when the Sun transitions from Sagittarius to Capricorn.

As today marks the beginning of Uttarayan (marks the Sun's northward transit, signifying the end of winter and onset of prosperity), the days will gradually become longer than the nights.

It is believed that activities like bathing, chanting, meditation, and donations on the day of Uttarayan are particularly auspicious.

Today, devotees flock to sacred places such as Devghat, Trishuli, Kaligandaki, Bagmati, Indrawati, Triveni, and Ridi for Maghi Snan (ritual bathing).
