Violence in Libya kills 5 civilians, injures 11 in March: UN

TRIPOLI – Violence in Libya killed five civilians and injured 11 others in March, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said Sunday. 

From March 1 to March 31, 2018, UNSMIL "documented 16 civilian casualties five deaths and 11 injuries during the conduct of hostilities across Libya, a significant drop from the two previous months," UNSMIL said in a report. Shelling, explosive remnants of war, gunfire, and vehicleborne improvised explosive devices caused most civilian casualties, the report said. 

UNSMIL demanded all fighting parties in Libya "cease the use of mortars and other indirect weapons and imprecise aerial bombardments in civilianpopulated areas, and not place fighters or other military objectives in populated areas." 
Since the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been plagued with escalating violence and unrest, as well as political division.
