Constitutional amendment to be driven by consensus between major parties: Gagan Thapa

Kathmandu, December 22 — The General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has stated that a mechanism will be formed within a few days for constitutional amendment.

While addressing the second ward conference of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Ward No. 30, under the Nepali Congress's 100-day special campaign, Thapa mentioned that the two major political parties in the government, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, will form a mechanism for constitutional amendment and begin work within a few days.

He emphasized that the mechanism would be created in a thoughtful and careful manner, ensuring the constitution is amended responsibly.

He stated that after discussions with all political parties, amendments would be made to the minimum required aspects of the constitution.

The mechanism, he explained, will first work to build understanding between the Nepali Congress and the UML, and only after discussions with other political parties will the constitutional amendments be made based on a consensus.

Thapa pointed out that constitutional amendments cannot be achieved merely by the desire of the UML and the Nepali Congress alone.

He stressed that the amendments would be made through consensus with Maoist, Madhes-based, and other political parties.

He mentioned that the amendments would include making the parliament more inclusive, ensuring the council of ministers is inclusive, and allowing a single political party to lead the country for one full term.
