Kathmandu, December 15 — On the occasion of Yomari Purnima and Jyapu Day, a procession featuring traditional floats and performances circled various areas of Kathmandu.

The rally, which began from Indrachok, passed through Bhotahiti, New Road, and culminated at Basantapur.

Participants dressed in traditional Newar attire, accompanied by slow beats of the Dhime, showcased colorful floats. The Newar community celebrates Yomari Purnima with joy and enthusiasm, marking the harvest of new rice.

This festival, held on the full moon day of the month of Mangsir, is also known as ‘Yomari Punhi.’

Yomari is a special dish made from rice flour, jaggery, and sesame, prepared using new harvests of rice.

The Newars celebrate Yomari Purnima by performing prayers and rituals in their rice storage rooms.

A unique tradition involves sending Yoimari filled with sesame and jaggery as a blessing from the maternal side to the daughter’s home, symbolizing good health for the unborn child during pregnancy.
