Criticism of BRI agreement childish: Foreign Minister Rana

Kathmandu, December 7 — Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana Deuba has dismissed the criticism surrounding the BRI agreement as childish remarks.

Speaking to News Agency Nepal while departing for The Hague to attend the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearing on climate change, Minister Rana made this comment.

She clarified that no decisions had been made regarding loans in relation to the agreement, and that those making comments without fully understanding the agreement were misguided.

She argued that decisions about taking or giving loans depend on mutual consent and request from the involved parties, and thus labeling the signing of the loan agreement as childish was inappropriate.

Minister Rana also emphasized that Nepal has not signed any agreements with China, except for the BRI.

She stated that Nepal is interested only in China's development initiatives and that the BRI agreement itself is a form of development assistance.

She further explained that Nepal's participation has been limited to China's Global Development Initiatives.
