By-elections for 44 local representatives on December 1

Kathmandu, November 5 — A by-election will be held on December 1 for 44 positions in local government bodies across Nepal. The Election Commission has announced that preparations for the by-election are progressing quickly.

Initially, by-elections were scheduled for 39 positions, but following the vacancy of five additional positions, the total number of positions for by-elections has increased to 44.

The by-election will be held in Sirijangha Rural Municipality Ward No. 3 in Taplejung after the resignation of the ward chairperson. A decision for the by-election was made on October 27 by the Election Commission. The same date also saw a decision for a by-election for the chairperson of Dakneshwari Municipality Ward No. 1 in Saptari, following the death of the ward chairperson.

Similarly, by-elections will be held for the chairperson of Shuddhodan Municipality Ward No. 1 in Kapilvastu, the vice-chairperson of Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality in Rukum (East), and the chairperson of Ward No. 2 of the same rural municipality, following the death of the respective local representatives, as per the decision on October 17.

According to the Election Commission, by-elections will take place in the following provinces:  
- Koshi: 9 positions  
- Madhesh: 7 positions  
- Bagmati: 7 positions  
- Gandaki: 1 position  
- Lumbini: 6 positions  
- Karnali: 8 positions  
- Sudurpashchim: 6 positions

In addition to these positions, by-elections will also be held for various ward chairperson and member positions across different local bodies.

Positions included in the by-election are:

- Gramthan Rural Municipality (Morang): Chairperson  
- Gaurishankar Rural Municipality (Dolakha): Vice-chairperson  
- Kirtipur Municipality (Kathmandu): Mayor  
- Putha Uttarganga Rural Municipality (Rukum East): Vice-chairperson  
- Mahabu Rural Municipality (Dailekh): Chairperson  
- Nalagad Municipality (Jajarkot): Deputy Mayor  
- Sarkegad Rural Municipality (Humla): Vice-chairperson  
- Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality (Bajura): Vice-chairperson  
- District Coordination Committee (Kailali): Chairperson  
And several other positions for ward chairpersons and members across various locations, as per the Election Commission.
