Butwal. Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) President Rabi Lamichhane has been in Rupandehi District Jail for 10 days as per the order of the High Court in the cooperative fraud case.
Lamichhane, who was arrested on Chaitra 22 with the order of the High Court Tulsipur Butwal, was brought to Rupandehi District Jail on 25.
The District Jail Administration has kept Lamichhane in a small and separate room built during the Covid period. Although that room was built during the Covid period, it was not used.
The prison administration says that the empty room was used because Lamichhane would be unsafe if kept with other prisoners.
No one comes to meet Lamichhane, who is also a former Home Minister, in prison. Prison administration sources have stated that, generally, except for two to four people, no one comes to meet him daily.
According to the source, Lamichhane spends a lot of time in prison studying. It is said that he is interested in historical books. Nepali and English language books are his favorites.
Lamichhane has been eating food cooked inside the prison. Sources say that it usually consists of lentils, rice, and vegetables.
The prison administration has arranged for the prisoners to listen to the radio and make phone calls inside. Prison sources say that sometimes Rabi Lamichhane also uses the phone.
The prison administration has also asked Rabi Lamichhane, ‘Do you have any demands?’ In response, he has said, ‘Nothing. Whatever is, is fine. The prison is like this,’ according to the source.
Rabi Lamichhane’s aides have approached the Supreme Court against the High Court order. The Supreme Court has sought a review order. Only after reviewing that order will the Supreme Court take a decision on him.
A joint bench of Justices Ramesh Dhakal and Santhiya Parajuli has ordered Ravi to be sent to detention, reversing the order of the District Court in the Supreme Cooperative fraud case and organized crime case in Butwal.
Former DIG Joshi is still in the hospital
A case has been filed against Rabi and former DIG Chhabilal Joshi in connection with the embezzlement of funds from the same cooperative. Both have been accused of embezzling money from Butwal's Supreme Cooperative and embezzling it from Gorkha Media.
Former DIG Joshi is also in the Rupandehi District Jail, Bhairahawa. On Magh 12, the bench of District Court Judge Vashit Kumar Ghimire had ordered Joshi to be sent to remand for trial. After that, Joshi, who was in jail, underwent a health check-up at the Universal Medical College in Bhairahawa on Chaitra 12 and has been staying in the hospital.
Joshi has been kept in a cabin at the Universal Medical College after suffering from high blood pressure and an enzyme. Hospital Information Officer Sushil Gurung said that a team led by Dr. Sandeep Subedi is treating him.
The prison administration has said that Joshi will return to the prison from the hospital in a few days.
