Nar Bahadur Karmacharya's birth centenary celebration begins

Kathmandu, October 30 — The centenary celebration of Nar Bahadur Karmacharya, a founding member of the Nepal Communist Party, has commenced today. The event began after Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), offered a garland at Karmacharya's statue in Bagalamukhi, Kumbeshwar, Lalitpur.

In celebration of Karmacharya's 100th birthday, events will be held throughout the year. The Maoist Centre has already directed party members to organize programs across the country in honor of this centenary.

Today, the Maoist Centre is hosting a seminar on “75 Years of the Nepali Communist Movement and Future Responsibilities” to mark the beginning of Karmacharya’s centenary. The seminar will start at 12:30 PM and will feature speeches from leaders including Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairman of the Unified Socialist Party, and communist leaders Mohan Baidhya, Mohan Bikram Singh, Yuvraj Gyawali, and Anil Sharma.

Karmacharya was born on October 30, 1924 AD in Jhapatol, Lalitpur, to parents Chandrabahadur and Shrikumari. He passed away on July 24, 2013 AD in Kathmandu.

In 1949, the Nepal Communist Party was established in Kolkata, India, under the leadership of Pushpalal. Karmacharya, along with Niranjan Govind Baidhya and Narayan Bilas Joshi, were members of the party. He was already involved in the pro-democracy movement in 1948 and was actively participating in anti-Rana and labor movements.

After the party's establishment, Karmacharya became the founding chairman of the labor organization. He was elected as the mayor of Lalitpur Municipality in the 1959 elections and was elected as a central committee member of the Nepal Communist Party in the third convention held in 1962.

Following party splits and divisions, he continuously worked to unify various revolutionary individuals and groups. During this time, Karmacharya became a central committee member of the Nepal Communist Party (Fourth General Convention) in 1974, and after the unification of four different parties in 1991, he played a significant role in the formation of the Unity Center and remained active until the end of his life as a patron of the Nepal Communist Party. He is regarded as a character-driven, socially popular, and controversy-free individual known for his simple life and high ideals.

Meanwhile, the Nar Bahadur Karmacharya Memorial Foundation has held a press conference to announce the year-long programs. The acting chairman of the foundation, Giriraj Mani Pokhrel, shared that the events will focus on Karmacharya's personality, dreams, and future plans.
