Nepali Congress accuses Rabi supporters of undermining judicial process

Kathmandu, October 23 — The Nepali Congress has accused supporters of Rabi Lamichhane, the president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) who was arrested in a cooperative fraud case, of engaging in disruptive activities and street protests that aim to influence the preliminary investigation of the judicial process. These actions are alleged to create undue pressure on neutral state bodies, instilling fear and intimidation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Meen Bishwakarma, head of the Congress publicity department, emphasized the party's serious concern regarding the activities of Lamichhane's supporters.

“The Nepali Congress expresses grave objection and condemnation towards activities that obstruct the fair investigation and judicial proceedings being carried out by legitimate state bodies, as well as those that disrupt citizens' personal freedoms, social harmony, and local peace and security,” the statement reads.

The Congress asserts that the law must be equal for all and should be upheld accordingly. However, they concluded that the activities being conducted under the banner of the RSP undermine and ridicule the Nepali people's desire for the rule of law.

Among those accused in the cooperative fraud case, GB Rai, the operator of Gorkha Media Company, remains at large, while Chhabilal Joshi was recently arrested and is currently in police custody for investigation. The Congress noted that Lamichhane himself was also apprehended for investigation just days ago in relation to the same case.

“It is the duty of every citizen to assist the investigation, inquiry, and judicial processes conducted by legal bodies following any allegations of wrongdoing. Political parties bear an even greater responsibility. However, the activities occurring under the name of the RSP belittle and mock the aspirations of the Nepali people for the establishment of the rule of law,” the statement continued.

The Congress maintains that any individual involved in activities deemed criminal under prevailing laws, regardless of their party affiliation, position, or status, should be subject to equal investigation and brought under legal scrutiny.

Stressing the collective duty to uphold the rule of law, ensure the credibility of judicial processes, and maintain the independence and impartiality of the justice system, the Congress appealed for restraint and cooperation with the investigation and judicial proceedings, urging against any provocative or unruly actions.
