Congress vice president Gurung proposes reducing MPs and legalizing cannabis

Ilam, September 1 — Nepali Congress vice president Dhanraj Gurung has criticized the opposition for engaging in "slander" since losing power. Gurung made these comments while addressing the provincial conference of Nepali Congress provincial assembly working committee 1(1) in Mai Municipality, Ilam.

Gurung questioned the previous government's commitment to good governance, pointing out that those involved in the gold smuggling had been granted immunity.

He also advocated for a constitutional amendment to reduce the number of MPs and suggested maintaining the proportional representation system within direct elections. Additionally, Gurung proposed legalizing cannabis cultivation to boost the economy and emphasized the need to tax local liquor through branding.

During the conference, Niskal Rai, president of the regional working committee of the provincial assembly, presented a political and organizational report that included proposals for party structural reforms and improvements in the candidate selection process.

Speeches were also given by Nepali Congress Ilam district president Dumbar Khadka, former president Keshav Thapa, regional president Shamsher Rai, leader Bheshraj Acharya, and district vice president Khagendra Dewan.
