UN commends passage of TRC Bill
Kathmandu, August 23 - The United Nations has praised the recent passage of the bill aimed at enacting laws and regulations for investigating disappearances and completing the remaining steps of the peace process through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, commended the approval of the Transitional Justice Bill by both houses of Nepal’s parliament. He stressed that the implementation of this bill should focus on the needs and perspectives of the victims.
Turk expressed optimism that, 8 years after the peace agreement, this bill will be a significant milestone in establishing lasting peace in Nepal and resolving issues related to truth and reconciliation.
In a statement released in Geneva on Thursday night, Turk emphasized the importance of appointing independent members to both commissions in a transparent manner. He noted that Nepal has become an example in the regional and international community for effectively advancing its peace process. The UN is prepared to support the Nepali government in every possible way during this crucial phase of the peace process.
