Preprations underway to appoint SC and HC judges

Kathmandu, August 16 - The Judicial Council has initiated the process to appoint judges to fill vacancies in both the Supreme Court and the High Courts. Discussions on these appointments began on Friday.

The Council aims to fill four vacant positions in the Supreme Court and ten in the High Courts.

Recently, the Judicial Council appointed 35 district judges. The Supreme Court has had an unfilled position for an extended period.

Chief Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, who also chairs the Council, is facing pressure to expedite these appointments due to the high caseload at the Supreme Court.

According to sources, the Council plans to finalize the names of the appointed judges by Friday; otherwise, a list of potential candidates will be prepared for discussion the following day.

The debate over the appointments includes two main viewpoints. Chief Justice Shrestha and some council members advocate for selecting judges from among current High Court Chief Justices.

In contrast, the Law Minister and Bar Association members argue for the inclusion of legal professionals from a broader spectrum. There is consensus on including a diverse range of candidates at higher levels, but disagreements remain regarding the allocation of quotas.
