Get to know Narayan Prasad Dahal, newly elected National Assembly Chair

KATHMANDU: Narayan Prasad Dahal, affectionately known as 'Saral' within Maoist circles, has been elected as the Chairperson of the National Assembly on Tuesday. .

Born on Chaitra 16, 2012 BS (March 29, 1956), in Dhikurpokhari, Kaski, the 68-year-old Dahal is the eldest child of Deurupa Dahal and Kul Prasad Dahal. He boasts a rich political background and is celebrated for his pivotal role in the success of the Maoist People's War.

Dahal's commitment to Communist ideology began during his student years, evolving into active political engagement.

He demonstrated unwavering dedication to the Maoist cause, contributing significantly to its ideological and institutional development during the People's War.

Despite challenges, he adeptly navigated the movement's complexities, both domestically and internationally.

His political journey saw him rise through the ranks, serving as joint-secretary and eventually Chairperson of Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekata Samaj.

His tenure as central secretary of the organization, starting in 2038 BS, was marked by the publication of Nepali Ekata Prakashan, fostering political awareness and unity among Nepalis in India.

Transitioning to full-time Communist party membership in 2037 BS, Dahal became a central member of the Maoist party in 2057 BS.

He fulfilled various responsibilities across Nepal and India, spending 18 years with the All India Ekata Samaj and the party.

Returning to Nepal during the peak of the People's War in 2060 BS, Dahal assumed significant roles assigned by the party in the Bheri-Karnali region, Kaski, and the Kathmandu Valley.

He emerged as a leader deeply connected with the people, advocating for the implementation of the rule of law within the party.

Narayan Prasad Dahal's election as National Assembly Chairperson underscores his enduring commitment to Communist ideals and his significant contributions to the Maoist movement's evolution.
