Mayor Shah warns to take action against teachers and staff if public schools are closed

KATHMANDU, June 17: Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Mayor Balen Shah has warned to take action against teachers and staff after the Nepal School Staff Council announced an indefinite closure of public schools from Sunday.

In accordance with Section 41(Ka) of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Act, teachers and employees will be dismissed if they are absent on Sunday, Mayor Shah informed. The School Management Committee will also be dissolved in accordance with Section 28 of the Education Act if the Committee fails to conduct regular classes.

Likewise, if any institution closes the public schools by force, they will be detained by the Nepal Police and criminal proceedings will be initiated against them in accordance with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Act and other prevailing laws.

School staff and teachers have been protesting for a long time after the government failed to address their demands. They have demanded that the various service facilities of the school employees mentioned in the policy and programmes should also be included in the budget.
