Why is it cold in early May?

KATHMANDU, May 4: Many people have started wearing their long jackets and sweaters again which they have stored with the end of winter. Even in early May, which is summer, the change in weather has made it feel cold.

Light to moderate rainfall has been occurring across the country for the past few days due to the effect of water vapor air from the Arabian Sea and local air. The temperature has also changed along with the rain.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, 6.6 millimeters of rain fell in Kathmandu on Thursday morning, and at the time, the minimum temperature of Kathmandu was measured to be 14.5 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Govinda Kumar Jha of the Water and Weather Forecasting Division informed Ratopati that the maximum temperature in Kathmandu reached 30 degrees Celsius in the days before the rainfall began.

Similarly, in Bhairahawa, the maximum temperature is 34.6 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. Before the rainfall, the maximum temperature in Bhairahawa had reached 40 degrees Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature has dropped to 5 degrees Celsius after the rain.

Indira Kandel, a senior meteorologist of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, informed Ratopati that the water vapor coming from the Arabian Sea entered Nepal through higher altitudes, thus resulting in the temperature drop, making it colder.

According to the rain gauge till 8 am, the highest amount of rain has fallen in Birendranagar of Surkhet with 14.6 mm. Similarly, 13.8 mm of rain has fallen in Pokhara, 7.1 mm in Jumla, and 6.6 mm in Kathmandu.

Similarly, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius in Jumla, 9.9 degrees Celsius in Dadeldhura, and 12.4 degrees Celsius in Taplejung.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, there will be a slight improvement in the weather from Friday. However, till Friday and Saturday, there will be a partial change in the hilly areas of the country and the weather will remain generally clear in some remaining areas. As per the division, there is a possibility of temporary or light rain with thunder and lightning in a few places in the hilly areas of the country as well.
