International Mother Language Day today
KATHMANDU, Feb. 21: International Mother Language Day is being celebrated by organizing various programs today. This day is celebrated on February 21 every year. The tradition of celebrating this day began with the slogan "Every word is equal to a star in the universe of languages".
The United Nations called February 21st, International Mother Language Day in 2000, and it started being celebrated worldwide. In Nepal however, the day started being celebrated only about a decade after.
The year 2008 was celebrated as the International Year of Languages as an awakening to the call of the United Nations for the preservation of mother tongues.
There are 131 languages spoken in Nepal.
