Is Nepal likely to be hit by the fourth wave of COVID-19?

COVID-19 positivity rate rises to 6.48 percent

KATHMANDU, July 14: The number of new cases of COVID-19 is increasing sharply in recent days in Nepal despite the lower number of COVID-19 tests. The BA.5 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has already been detected in the country.

Nepal recorded as many as 206 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours and the number of active COVID-19 cases has surpassed the 1000-mark.

The number of new cases detected on Saturday was 102. As many as 121 new cases were recorded on Sunday, 168 on Monday and 177 on Tuesday.

Former director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Dr Babu Ram Maranisi maintains that the country has already been hit by the fourth wave of COVID-19. “At the end of the third wave, the number of daily new cases was below 10 which has now surged past 200. So, the country has already been hit by the fourth wave.”

Infectious disease specialist, Dr Pravath Adhikari also believes that the fourth wave of COVID-19 has already started. “The number of COVID-19 cases are likely to go up in the coming days.”

According to Dr Adhikari, those who had received COVID-19 vaccines six months ago are experiencing serious complications if infected with the virus. “The virus is found affecting the upper respiratory tract in most of the cases in these kinds of people.”

The health experts believe that the number of cases we are witnessing could just be a tip of an iceberg. The number can be higher, experts say.

The general public have been urged to undergo COVID-19 tests immediately if they experience symptoms similar to common cold and COVID-19.
