House Session today: Will MCC be tabled?
KATHMANDU, December 21: The second meeting of the 10th ongoing House Session is scheduled for 1 PM today.
At the time when the Millennium Corporate Challenge (MCC) of the United States of America (USA) has created a buzz across the political arena of the country, the government-led by President of Nepali Congress and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is looking forward to ratify the $500 million compact through parliament.
At the present context, only the ruling Nepali Congress has expressed its will to pass the compact through parliament. NC’s coalition partners, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorcha Party, are all against the MCC which has also threatened the coalition government.
Even if the government is preparing to table the MCC in parliament, today's possible schedule of parliamentary meeting does not include the proceeding to table the MCC.
Meanwhile, the main opposition party, CPN-UML, has been continuously obstructing the House Sessions acquising Speaker of the lower House, Agni Prasad Sapkota of supporting Chairman of CPN (Unified Socialist), Madhav Kumar Nepal, to split the CPN-UML and register a new political party.
Even if PM Deuba is all in for ratification of the MCC from Parliament, he has failed to forge a common consensus within the ruling alliance.
