UML leader Mahesh Basnet announces candidacy for party secretary

KATHMANDU: Lawmaker and central committee member of the main opposition CPN-UML, Mahesh Basnet has announced to contest for the post of party secretary in the forthcoming Tenth National General Convention. 

Organizing a press conference in the capital on Tuesday, Basnet claimed that he would emerge victorious through a popular vote in the general convention as he holds 'immense support' from the party line. 

He is the first to announce candidacy in the secretarial position of the party. As per the UML party statute, the convention elects as many as seven secretaries. 

Basnet, who had also served as a minister in the Sushil Koirala-led government, is considered close to Chairman Oli.
