Dhami creates history in women's wrestling by winning SAG gold

Kanchanpur–Wrestler Sangita Dhami has now stolen the limelight following her win in women's wrestling under the ongoing 13th South Asian Games. Dhami has created a history in women's wrestling by becoming a first Nepal to win a gold medal in the sport in SAG so far.

She defeated Bangladesh's Sakhira Sarakarine to win gold in women's 55 kilograms group in the match in Janakpur on Saturday. "Sangita's hard work and regular training has paid off. I have brought her to the sport three years ago when I was in search of potential wrestlers. Her win has brought happiness to all of us," said Coach Rajendra Chand.

Earlier, she also won gold in women's wrestling in the Eighth National Games. Women's wrestling has been incorporated as SAG sport from the 12th SAG. "In the 12th SAG, three women wrestlers from Sudurpachim State had participated. Now in the 13th SAG, most of women wrestlers have won medals," said Chand.

Wrestlers Shibangi Dube, Ambika Bhandari, Manisha Singh and Komal Khatri, all from Bhimdattanagar, have bagged medals in the 13th SAG. Dube and Bhandari won a silver medal each, and Singh and Khatri bronze. Likewise, Nirmala Jagari from Bhimdattanagar also won silver. Likewise, in men's 70 kilograms category, Suresh Chunara of Bhimdattanagar bagged a bronze medal in the 13th SAG.
