Hyenas in Salyan facing survival threat

Salyan–Hyenas in the district are facing survival threat, thanks to traps placed by local people and other reasons. Two hyenas have died in the past three months alone of three found injured.

They died in the course of treatment. Local people of Bhotechaur of Chhatreshwori rural municipality on Wednesday found a hyena with its back fractured, and handed it over to the Banke National Park.

Traps set up by local people are main cause behind the death of hyenas, said Thir Bahadur Karki, chief of the division forest office. "Hyenas are injured after falling into the traps set up by the villagers to protect them from wild animals.

They also get injured after being hit by speeding vehicles while crossing roads. Many wild animals in the district are injured after being hit by speeding vehicles," he said.

Lately hyenas stray into human settlements in search of prey and kill domestic animals. As a result, the villagers kill them by offering them their prey laced with poison, said Karki. Nepal has more than 200 hyenas, according to the division office.
