Nepal’s presidential election begins

KATHMANDU, March 8: The election of Nepal’s new president is currently underway at the federal parliament building in Kathmandu.

The election which began at around 10 AM today will be electing the third president of Nepal.

Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress and Subhash Chandra Nembang of CPN-UML are vying for the post.

A total of 884 lawmakers of the federal parliament, the provincial assembly and the national assembly will be casting their votes to elect the new president of Nepal. Unlike other elections in the country, the public is not allowed to vote. Instead, an electoral college made up of all members of the federal parliament's House of Representatives and National Assembly, as well as members of the seven provincial parliaments, will choose the president. The electoral college will consist of 884 members, including 275 House of Representatives members, 59 National Assembly members, and 550 members from the provincial assemblies, as outlined in article 62 of the constitution.

The Nepal presidential election is significant for the country's political future, and the outcome will impact the nation. The voting process is expected to be conducted smoothly, with the results eagerly awaited by the citizens of Nepal.

In terms of the mathematics of the voting process, National Assembly lawmakers have a vote weight of 4,661, while nominated lawmakers have a vote weight of 236. The Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, and Janamorcha are all represented in the electoral college.
