Thapa receives Krishnasen Ichhuk Memorial Journalism Award

Kathmandu–This year's 'Krishnasen Ichhuk Memorial Journalism Award' has been presented to Surya Thapa.

Former Prime Minister and chair of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ' Prachanda' honoured Thapa with the annual award carrying a purse of Rs 50,000 amidst a programe here today organised by the Press Organisation Nepal in commemoration of the 17th death anniversary of journalist, litterateur and martyr Ichhuk.

Upon receiving the award, journalist Thapa, the former editor of Budhabar Weekly, spoke the need of following the path carved out by Krishnasen 'Ichhuk'.

He announced to contribute Rs 10,000 of the prize money and Rs 15,000 from his personal account (in total Rs 25,000) to establish a revolving fund for scholarship programme at Sarangkot-based Bhumi Development Basic School in Pyuthan where Ichhuk had studied.

Krishnasen ' Ichhuk', 46 at the time, was murdered while in police detention on Jeth 13, 2059 BS (27th May, 2002).

He was the editor of the then Janadesh Weekly. Similarly, the ' Shakti-Tara Memorial Journalism Award' carrying a purse of Rs 25,000 was presented to Chandraman Shrestha on the same occasion.

The recipients of both awards were selected on the recommendation of the selection committee towards that end.
