Indigenous culture preservation stressed

Pokhara– Indigenous Gurung community on Tuesday celebrated their cultural festival, Tahote, in a much fanfare.

The festival is collectively celebrated on last Tuesday of Shrawan (mid-July) and Chaitra (second week of April) every year. On the occasion, Tamu Dhi – a public organisation of Gurung community took out a rally with bands and cultural processions from Birauta and went through Mustang Chowk and Prithvi Chowk before it converged into a corner meet at its own building.

On the occasion, Gandaki State Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung underscored the need to preserve and promote the culture of indigenous nationalities.

Also speaking on the occasion, Chair of National Federation of Indigenous Nationalities Dharma Gurung, Tamu Dhi Chair Karma Gurung and Vice-chair Hom Gurung called for devising concrete measures towards preserving cultural attributions of indigenous nationalities community.

The festival is believed to be celebrated to ward off enemies, ghost and diseases, improve crops cultivation, reduce risks of natural disaster and attain peace and happiness.
