KMC receives few complaints

Kathmandu –Kathmandu Metropolitan City has set up a hotline number 1180 three months ago to hear problems of the Kathmanduites, but only meager complaints have been recorded so far.

The KMC has received very few complaints through the hotline, said Krishna Prasad Chapagain, Chief of the Public Contact Unit under the KMC.

"The complaints received include problems created by failure to pick garbage thrown on the roads, unmanaged footpath stalls, stray animals, sanitation and lack of public toilets," he said.
Why so few complaints?

Given the wide range of issues plaguing Kathmandu such as air pollution, dust, unmanaged roads, drinking water woes and sluggish post-reconstruction process, the KMC ought to have been flooded with the complaints but not many complaints were registered in the KMC through the hotline.

While KMC is bracing up to receive the grievances of the public, not much complaints were pouring in through the hotline, shared Chapagain. He opined that since not much people were aware about the hotline service launched by the KMC, many people were not exploiting this service to get their voices heard.

Considering this scenario, the KMC is preparing to switch to email service and widely preferred social networking site-Facebook- to facilitate the public in lodging the complaints and feedbacks.

KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya had launched the hotline service considering the convenience of the people to register their complaints and give feedback to the KMC but the hotline is stationed at the Environment Department of KMC at Teku rather than being at the Chief Secretariat.

KMC Public Private Partnership Unit Chief Dhruba Kafle shared that discussion to build 40 toilets in various places across Kathmandu within was in the final phase.

Work in this connection is expected to gain pace towards the mid of December, according to Kafle.
Similarly, regarding the sustainable management of garbage in Kathmandu, KMC has been expediting the site construction of landfill site for the same.
