Pramila Aryal Advocates for Open Competition in Constitutional Body Appointments

Kathmandu. CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Padam Aryal has stated that there should be a provision for open competition for appointments to constitutional bodies like the Election Commission.

She stated this on Thursday during a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee to discuss the hearing of the Chief Election Commissioner and commissioners. She said that the appointment process should be made more transparent and competitive as the Election Commission is a political institution that works impartially. Mentioning that the current government has also continued the old practice, she emphasized that the hearing process should not be rushed but should be advanced through consensus after sufficient discussion with all parties.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Leader Aryal said, 'In the current environment, open competition is good. The Election Commission appears neutral but is a political institution in its work. Therefore, it would be very good if there was a provision for completely open competition in such institutions, but we are moving forward by holding onto the old practice. Now, if we are to make the parliamentary hearing not just a formality but truly good, let's discuss it broadly. Our desire is that the most qualified person comes forward by creating such an environment.'

She emphasized that the committee should not just formally approve the persons recommended by the Constitutional Council, but should create an environment for open discussion for the selection of qualified individuals.
