London. There is a growing discussion that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer may announce his resignation on Monday. According to the British newspaper The Observer, Starmer is expected to announce a deadline for his resignation on Monday. 

According to the report, he is discussing with his wife before making a final decision. However, government sources have not confirmed the claim and have stated that Starmer is focused on running the government and has previously made it clear that he will not step down from leadership.

His pressure on leadership has increased after his potential rival Andy Burnham was elected to Parliament on Friday. After becoming an MP, Burnham is in a position to formally challenge for the leadership of the Labour Party. Starmer had urged on Friday to face any leadership challenge and avoid internal party conflict.

Starmer, who led the Labour Party to a historic majority victory in the 2024 general election, has become very unpopular in recent months due to various controversies, scandals, and policy U-turns. It is analyzed that voters have formed the opinion that he has not been able to fulfill the promises made during the election to improve the standard of living.

Pressure for resignation from within his own party

According to a Reuters survey, more than 100 Labour Party MPs have publicly demanded that Starmer step down or at least announce a deadline for his departure. This is about a quarter of the party's total MPs. According to The Observer, Starmer may have concluded that it is difficult to remain in his position after discussions with cabinet members, advisors, donors, and trade union leaders.

If Starmer resigns or is removed from office, Britain will have its seventh Prime Minister in the last decade.
