Prisoner Ram Jai Maurya, who escaped from two jails twice, re-arrested in Kapilvastu

Kapilvastu. A prisoner who had escaped from two different jails twice while serving a sentence for a murder case has been re-arrested by the police. 

The police have arrested 58-year-old Ram Jai Maurya, a resident of the former Udaipur Village Development Committee Ward No. 8 and currently Maharajganj Municipality Ward No. 6 Banjarariya in the district, from Krishnanagar, Kapilvastu. Maurya's crime and escape spree from prison had been going on for a long time. The Kapilvastu District Court had sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment on January 22, 2007, and 20 years imprisonment on January 19, 2009, for the murder case. After that verdict, he was sent to the District Prison Kapilvastu to serve the remaining sentence. However, on January 14, 2010, at 1 AM, Maurya and a group of eight people escaped from the prison by digging a tunnel in a cinematic style.

The court, hearing the case of the prisoner's escape, sentenced Maurya to an additional 25 years, 3 months, and 3 days imprisonment on May 24, 2011. Meanwhile, a verdict by the then Appellate Court Butwal on October 1, 2012, revised his imprisonment record and sentenced him to 20 years for the murder case.

Maurya, who escaped by digging a tunnel, was successfully re-arrested by the police on June 27, 2011. He was then sent to the Nakhkhu Prison Office in Lalitpur to serve his sentence. After staying in Nakhkhu Prison for a long time, Maurya managed to escape again last year, on August 20, 2025, taking advantage of the 'Jangi' movement inside the prison.

After escaping from Nakhkhu Prison, the police intensified their search for him. While secretly gathering clues and searching, a special police team from the Krishnanagar Area Police Office, Kapilvastu, found him. Deputy Superintendent of Police of the District Police Office Kapilvastu, Ripendra Kumar Singh, informed that Maurya was formally arrested on May 24, 2026, near the Nepal-India border area in Krishnanagar Municipality Ward No. 1, Kukurbhukuwa, Kapilvastu.

The arrested Maurya has been presented before the respected Kapilvastu District Court on Monday to serve the remaining sentence. As per the court's order, he has been sent back to the Kapilvastu Prison Office.
