At Least 15 Dead in Bangladesh Truck Accident

Dhaka. At least 15 people have died and 10 others have been injured in a horrific truck accident on a major highway in central Bangladesh on Monday morning. Police said the truck, carrying iron rods and extra passengers, lost control and overturned, causing heavy casualties.

The accident occurred around 5 am in the Soratol area of Tangail district, about 83 kilometers north-west of the capital Dhaka. According to local police chief Fuad Hossain, the truck overturned after the driver lost control.

He said the truck was carrying hitchhikers and was traveling from Dhaka to the northern region. It was confirmed that many passengers died on the spot after the accident.

The incident occurred amid increasing passenger traffic ahead of the Islamic festival Eid al-Adha. Many people are traveling across the country to meet their families for the festival, which will be celebrated on Thursday.

According to the police, most of the accident victims were daily wage laborers. They were traveling to reunite with their families for the festival.

Eyewitnesses told local television channels that they rushed to the scene after hearing a loud noise. Efforts were then made to rescue the trapped passengers.

Such road accidents are frequent in Bangladesh. Officials say that thousands of people lose their lives every year in this country of more than 160 million people due to poor adherence to traffic rules, bad road conditions, and careless driving.
