India Appoints Lt Gen NS Subramani as New Chief of Defence Staff

Kathmandu. The Indian government has appointed NS Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The tenure of the current CDS Anil Chauhan is ending on May 30. Subramani has been appointed to that post.

Lieutenant General Subrahmany is currently serving as the Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat. He had been holding the responsibility of that post since September 1, 2025. Prior to this, he served as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025.

Similarly, he also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024. Lieutenant General Subrahmany was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985.

His service in the Indian Army spans over 37 years. Indian media have reported that he has served in various conflict zones and challenging geographical terrains. He is said to have extensive experience working in the China-Pakistan border areas.

Subramani is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He has also received higher training at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and the National Defence College. He holds a Master of Arts (MA) from King's College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.

Lieutenant General Subrahmany has been honored with various high awards for his distinguished military service. He has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
