Taiwan President Lai Ching-te Makes Surprise Visit to Eswatini Amidst Chinese Opposition

Eswatini. Despite strong opposition and obstruction from China, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has made a surprise visit to the African country of Eswatini. 

Lai, who went to participate in the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III's coronation, declared that Taiwan is a sovereign nation and no one can stop it from having relations with the world. China, which considers Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory, commented on Lai's move, calling it 'rat-like behavior'.

According to Taiwan, Beijing created significant diplomatic pressure to stop this visit. Just last month, due to China's pressure, three Indian Ocean countries did not allow Lai's plane to use their airspace, affecting the visit. 

This time, to reduce the risk of security and external interference, President Lai reached there 'suddenly' using the Eswatini government's own aircraft. Both countries kept this visit secret until landing.

Stating that Taiwan's 23 million people have the right to connect with the world, Lai said that no country should try to stop Taiwan's contribution. Eswatini is one of the 12 countries in the world that maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. This visit by Lai has reaffirmed Taiwan's international presence and diplomatic resilience.

Meanwhile, China's Taiwan Affairs Office accused Lai of visiting through a 'backdoor' and compared his conduct to a 'rat crossing the road'. 

Taiwan has also strongly protested China's such comments. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council sarcastically remarked that Taiwan does not need Beijing's permission to go anywhere and that China's language is 'extremely boring'. 

Major powers like the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and France have previously expressed concern over the obstacles created by China in Taiwan's flight path.
