China Promotes Bamboo as Eco-Friendly Alternative to Plastic

Hujo. The multifaceted utility of bamboo has long been known in China. Historically, for many centuries, Chinese people have used this giant grass for food, transportation, weapons, as well as for building houses, making paper, and various tools.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, China has 7 million hectares of bamboo forests. China is the world's largest producer and exporter of bamboo products. 

According to estimated data, about 30-400 million metric tons of plastic waste are produced globally every year. In this context, bamboo has emerged as a reliable and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic due to its multifaceted nature and biodegradability.

In China, major bamboo-producing provinces such as Zhejiang, Fujian, and Sichuan are at the forefront of the campaign to replace plastic with bamboo. In Anji County, located in the northwestern part of Zhejiang Province, bamboo has already replaced various plastic materials.

Here, bamboo is being used for single-use takeaway cutlery, as well as for brushes and combs used in hotels and homestays. Anji County, with its bamboo forests and long history of bamboo use, is now becoming an excellent model for increasing the use of bamboo as a substitute for plastic.

In 2023, China released a three-year plan to accelerate the industrial development of bamboo as a plastic alternative, designating Anji as the first model base. In Anji, local government canteens and affiliated bodies began replacing plastic food trays with bamboo trays as early as 2022.

The Bamboo Product Exhibition Center displays bamboo cutlery, straws, and packaging boxes, as well as bedding and clothing made from bamboo fiber, highlighting the potential of bamboo as a plastic alternative.

In Anji, bamboo cutlery, brushes, combs, and toothbrushes are widely used. More than 300 restaurants and hotels in the county use bamboo tableware.

In the local market, plastic bags have been replaced by biodegradable bags made from 60% bamboo powder. These bags decompose into soil within a year and are stronger than plastic bags.

Kindergartens in Anji have also started using bamboo toys instead of plastic for children to play with.

According to data from the local forestry department, Anji produces 4 to 5 hundred thousand tons of bamboo annually. Bamboo undergoes various processing procedures to become a multifaceted material. Some products like construction materials, cups, and straws are made directly from bamboo through physical processing, while pressed trays, clothes made from bamboo fiber, and packaging materials made from bamboo pulp are prepared through chemical processing.

With improvements in processing technology, bamboo products have become more durable and resistant to limitations. For example, bamboo is converted into charcoal through 'carbonization' at high temperatures, which is used to make mold-resistant chairs and chopsticks.

Bamboo peels, once wasted in the forest, are now pressed to make food trays or plates for takeaway and camping.

The benefits of bamboo are not limited to its flexibility and strength; it is also fast-growing and renewable. While a tree may take more than a decade to grow, bamboo matures in four to six years. This allows it to be harvested multiple times without replanting.

The industrial development of bamboo in Anji is also benefiting the local community. Villagers earn income by cutting bamboo, and its high carbon sequestration capacity opens up additional income streams through carbon credit exchanges.

With about a thousand industries involved in this sector, bamboo has become the backbone of Anji's economy. Anji has embraced the philosophy of 'Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets' put forward 20 years ago by Xi Jinping, the current president and then secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.

In 2023, Anji's bamboo industry generated approximately 18 billion yuan in revenue. Bamboo products are consumed in domestic and international markets, including Europe, Japan, America, and Southeast Asia.

Although the future of bamboo as a plastic alternative looks bright, changing consumer perspectives seems to take time. Currently, Anji County is trying to develop the potential of bamboo not only as a substitute for wood and plastic but also for steel, gas, and food.

Due to its high calorie content, bamboo can be used as a source of renewable energy, as a construction material due to its hardness, as a healthy food, and as a biomass material in cosmetics.
