Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi to be kept under house arrest

Kathmandu. Former leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, who was kept in custody after a military 'coup', will be kept under house arrest.

Min Aung Hlaing, who became president from Myanmar's junta chief, ordered on Thursday to reduce the sentence of the ousted leader Suu Kyi and keep her under house arrest in a designated house.

A statement issued by Min Aung Hlaing's office mentioned that the remaining sentence of the 80-year-old Suu Kyi has been reduced.

It is not immediately clear where she will be moved. A senior leader of her dissolved National League for Democracy party told AFP that leader Suu Kyi will be kept somewhere in the capital Naypyidaw.

He said on condition of anonymity citing security reasons, "We do not know exactly where the place to keep leader Suu Kyi will be."

Min Aung Hlaing led the 'military coup' against Suu Kyi as army chief, which has led to civil war in the country for five years.

Hlaing was sworn in as Myanmar's elected president this month after a tightly controlled election boycotted by opposition parties including Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party.
