Prachanda Criticizes Government for 'Authoritarian Path', Cites Trade Union Ban and Squatter Evictions

Surkhet. CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has stated that the current government led by Balen Shah is moving on an authoritarian path.  

Speaking at a press conference organized in the district headquarters of Rukum West on Thursday, he said this, citing the move to abolish trade unions and student organizations. He also spoke on the issue of ordinances.

'Bringing ordinances by bypassing the parliament and stopping the session that has already been called is against democracy,' he said. 'This is also against parliamentary tradition, and we have warned the government not to do so. Adopting such an undemocratic method is against the constitution.'

Prachanda also expressed his views on the issue of squatters.  He commented that the work done by using force or bulldozers without making alternative arrangements for the squatters is completely wrong.

'This method is not right; even if the squatters are occupying illegally, their actual situation should be understood and investigated,' he added. 'But the government acted in haste and used force.'

Apartments were built for the alternative management of squatters during the time of the then Maoist government, but he recalled that the work could not be completed at that time.

He stated that thousands of families have been displaced using the army and armed police.

'The government should immediately pay attention to their management,' he added. Prachanda also said that they will cooperate with the government's good deeds and oppose its wrongdoings.
