Powerful 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Japan's Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued

Tokyo. A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the northern coastal region of Japan on Monday. Following the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for the affected areas.

Earthquake occurred near the Sanriku coast at approximately 4:53 PM local time. Preliminary reports indicate its epicenter was at a depth of about 10 kilometers below sea level.

The state broadcaster NHK warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) could occur. Tsunami waves have reportedly been observed 31 miles off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.
