Lumbini Chief Minister Acharya Inaugurates Jitgadhi Victory Festival in Butwal

Butwal. Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chetnarayan Acharya inaugurated the Jitgadhi Victory Festival in Butwal today. Organized by the Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City, the annual festival commenced this year with a special program.

The Nepali Army team was welcomed in the Nuwakot area of Butwal, and the formal program began after a rally featuring various cultural processions from the Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City reached the Jitgadhi Fort.

Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City Mayor Khelraj Pandey stated that the festival aims to preserve and promote the historic Jitgadhi Fort and disseminate the history of valor to the public. The festival is celebrated in memory of the historic day on Baisakh 7, 1872 B.S., when the Nepali Army defeated the British forces equipped with modern weaponry. 

In the battle that took place in the Jitgadhi area on the banks of the Tinau River in Butwal, the Nepali Army was led by Colonel Ujir Singh Thapa, while the British forces were led by General Sullivan Wood.

According to historians, more than three hundred British soldiers were killed in that battle.
