Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Nepal Police to Strengthen Collaboration on Urban Safety

Kathmandu. The relationship between Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Nepal Police is set to be further strengthened in areas of road safety, urban security, and urban management. During a meeting between Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Sunita Dangol, and Inspector General of Police, Dan Bahadur Karki, discussions were held regarding the current status and requirements for road safety, urban security, and urban management, with a focus on enhancing mutual cooperation to ensure better service delivery to citizens.

During the meeting, Acting Mayor Dangol stated, 'We wish to collaborate with Nepal Police on tasks such as road safety and traffic management, protection of encroached public land and promotion of public utility, management of unorganized settlements, urban management, and the campaign to make the city free of street-dwelling people.' She added, 'The support of Nepal Police will strengthen the Metropolitan Police Force. This will lead to changes that citizens will be able to feel.'

During the session, Inspector General Karki expressed his readiness to provide the necessary support to the Metropolitan City. 'Coordination for the Metropolitan City's work will be facilitated through the Valley Police Office. We have appointed a focal person for this,' he added, stating, 'We expect support from the Metropolitan City to develop a system that yields high results with minimal manpower by increasing public participation through awareness programs and the use of technology.'

The discussion also covered topics including the control of drug abuse, regulation of smoking and alcohol consumption in public places, parking management, road signage and traffic management, security for night and morning bus services, and the participation of Nepal Police in street service operations under the 'Street-Dwelling People Free Kathmandu' program. The meeting was attended by officials including the Chief Administrative Officer of the Metropolitan City, Saroj Guragain.
