Egg Prices Rise in Chitwan Due to Supply Shortage and Increased Demand

Chitwan. Egg prices have increased following a decline in production and a surge in demand. The Layers Poultry Association has raised the farm-gate price of eggs, effective from today.

Under the new pricing, the farm-gate price for a crate of large eggs (30 pieces) has reached Rs 465. Previously, a crate of large eggs was sold for Rs 450, marking an increase of Rs 15. Similarly, the farm-gate price for medium eggs has been set at Rs 415, up from the previous price of Rs 400.

Last Mangsir, egg prices reached an all-time high, with large eggs selling at Rs 565 per crate and medium eggs at Rs 550 at the farm level. According to Association President Binod Pokharel, production has declined due to poultry diseases and rising temperatures. Demand has increased due to the tourist activity leading up to the New Year, while stricter border controls have reduced the influx of imported eggs. Despite these factors, prices have yet to reach the actual cost of production.

The production cost per egg is Rs 19.12, which translates to a cost of Rs 574 per crate for farmers. Farmers are currently discouraged as prices remain below the cost of production, though they remain hopeful for further increases. The Association sets the support price for eggs based on market conditions, and President Pokharel expressed hope that prices will eventually rise to cover production costs.
