Seven arrested in Sindhupalchok for attempting to settle rape case through bribery and intimidation

Sindhupalchok. Police have arrested a gang of seven middlemen in Sindhupalchok who were attempting to settle a serious crime like rape through financial inducements and intimidation.

The District Police Office, Sindhupalchok, took them into custody from Syauli, Chautara Sangachokgadhi Municipality-1, based on specific intelligence. 

The arrested individuals are 45-year-old Shrikaji Dong, 50-year-old Maila Dong, 24-year-old Sushil Dong, 42-year-old Mikmar Dong, 31-year-old Bishal Dong, 32-year-old Netra Dong, and 52-year-old Ngema Chhiring Lama, all from Jugal Rural Municipality-2.

According to the police, these middlemen were colluding with the defendant of a rape case registered on 2082 Chaitra 16, pressuring the victim and their family to withdraw the case and reach a settlement. Police raided the location while they were conducting illegal financial transactions. 

During the operation, police seized 516,932 rupees in cash, checks worth 235,000 rupees from Global IME Bank and Sindhu Bikas Bank, and 7 mobile phones.

Under Section 227 (a) of the National Penal Code 2074, attempting to settle heinous crimes like rape is a punishable offense in itself. 

The suspects are currently under further investigation after obtaining a remand extension from the Sindhupalchok District Court. The police have warned that settling rape cases under any pretext is illegal and that anyone involved in such activities will face strict legal action.
