Rastriya Swatantra Party Sets Historic Record in Recent Parliamentary Elections

Kathmandu. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has set a historic record in the recently concluded parliamentary elections. RSP has established a record based on the number and percentage of seats won in the first-past-the-post category.

According to the official election results from the commission so far, RSP has secured victories in 124 constituencies out of 165, while maintaining a lead in one seat. This marks the first time in history that such a large number of candidates from a single party have been elected through the direct voting system.

Previously, in the 2064 BS elections, the then CPN (Maoist Centre) had won 120 seats. However, at that time, Nepal had 240 constituencies. RSP has now surpassed that record within the current 165 constituencies.

The percentage of seats won in the first-past-the-post category is another record set by RSP. Winning 121 seats translates to winning 73.33 percent of the seats, which is the highest ever recorded.

Previously, in the first parliamentary election held in 2015 BS, the Nepali Congress won 74 out of 109 seats. This was equivalent to 67.89 percent. No election since then has achieved a better result.

In the 2048 BS elections, when there were 205 seats, the Congress won 110 seats, which is 53.65 percent.

In the mid-term election held in 2051 BS, CPN-UML, which became the largest party, won 88 out of 205 seats, accounting for 42.93 percent.

In the 2056 BS elections, the Congress secured victories in 111 out of 205 seats, equivalent to 54.15 percent.

In 2064 BS, the Maoists won 120 out of 240 seats, which is 50 percent. At that time, the Maoists had a total of 220 lawmakers including proportional representation members, which is the highest number based on sheer count to date. 

In 2070 BS, the Congress became the largest party, winning 105 out of 240 seats, which is 43.75 percent. 

In 2074 BS, CPN-UML won 80 out of 165 seats. At that time, the Maoists secured victory in 36 seats. 

In 2079 BS, the Congress won 57 out of 165 seats, which is 34.55 percent. 

Furthermore, this is the first time a single party has garnered the highest number of votes through the proportional representation electoral system. According to the votes counted so far, RSP has crossed 4 million votes. In comparison, CPN-UML had secured 3.173 million votes in the 2074 BS elections. 

In 2064 BS, the Maoists received 3.144 million votes, in 2070 BS the Congress received 2.418 million votes, and in 2079 BS, CPN-UML received the highest number of votes at 2.791 million.
