International Border Crossings to Close 72 Hours Ahead of General Elections

Kathmandu. International border crossings connecting districts will be closed starting Sunday midnight. The closure of border crossings in districts connected to international borders is being implemented with the objective of conducting the House of Representatives election scheduled for Thursday in a clean, impartial, and independent manner.

The Election Security Directive mandates that border crossings must be closed 72 hours prior to the election. Information Officer Suman Ghimire stated that the Commission recommended closing the border crossings in accordance with this provision.

Accordingly, international border crossings will be closed from Sunday midnight until the voting process is completed.

He said, ‘In accordance with the Election Security Directive prepared by the Election Commission to make the election clean, impartial, and independent, the international border crossings in districts connected to international borders will remain closed from tonight at 12 AM as recommended by the Election Commission to the Government of Nepal. The Election Commission requests the concerned bodies to make/arrange for the necessary arrangements accordingly.’

The Commission has also urged the concerned bodies to effectively implement the arrangements regarding the closure of border crossings. The Commission has stated that it is adopting various security measures to tighten security and control potential undesirable activities throughout the election period.
