Kanchanpur serving as route for women trafficking

Bhimduttanagar –Kanchanpur is being used lately as a route for women trafficking. Data with Maiti Nepal, Kanchanpur shows that women trafficking in the name of foreign employment is believed to be taking place here in a dramatic fashion.

At time of interventions by the Maiti Nepal representatives along the border areas, most women say that they are travelling to either Simla for employment or Delhi to visit relatives, Maiti Nepal Kanchanpur coordinator Maheshwori Bhatta said.

"Our experiences show that their final destination is probably the third countries," said Bhatta. In many cases, middlewomen are used for trafficking of women and girls.

Gaddachauki is major border point here through which women are trafficked to Indian and other countries. It also serves as a shortest land route to reach New Delhi from Nepal and has become lately a choice of human traffickers and middlepersons for carrying out their business.

The trend of Nepalis going to Bahrain, Kuwait, Dubai, Kuwait, Kirgizstan and Malaysia illegally thorough an India route is on the rise of late.

All trafficked women are not sold into brothels in India as human traffickers have found their business flourishing in third countries.

In some cases, women supposedly going for foreign employment get support of their family members to cross the border due to the manipulation of middlepersons.

Maiti Nepal, Kanchanpur records a rescue of average 10 to 12 women a month from being trafficked across the border."We saved some women from Kanchanpur sometime earlier from New Delhi airport from being trafficked into Kuwait," he said, recognising monetary enticement, unemployment, and poverty as main factors pushing women into the hands of traffickers.

Women from Sindhupalchok, Nuwakot, Kavrepalanchok and Rasuwa dominate the numbers of women going to foreign countries for employment through an Indian route said Bhatta.

"Relatives knowingly or unknowingly involve themselves in transporting women apparently going for foreign employment across the border, which has caused difficulties in a rescue operation. Direct Kathmandu-New Delhi and Pokhara-New Delhi bus service has also helped the brokers a lot," he said. Most women are trafficked into third world besides India.

Maiti Nepal had rescued 22 women from across the border last year.
In 2017, applications has been filed with Maiti Nepal seeking whereabouts of 204 women. "Of the, status of 28 was found. Applications have been registered, seeking status of 55 missing women this year. Of them, whereabouts of 10 have been found," he said.
