Nepal's Sole Rubber Industry, Gorakhkali Tyre Factory, Lies Abandoned for a Decade

Gorakhkali Rubber Industry Limited, located in Majhuwa, Gorkha Municipality-13, was registered with the Department of Industry on Jestha 30, 2041 BS, and was inaugurated by the then King Birendra in 2042 BS. Established as Nepal's only rubber industry, it began commercial production in the 2050s BS decade.

The industry, established with assistance from the friendly nation of China, significantly contributed to national production and capital growth. Operated under a public-private partnership, the industry aimed to produce 120,000 heavy and light vehicle tires annually. During its operation, it was producing approximately 88,000 tires per year. It manufactured 12 types of tires for trucks, 5 types for jeeps and vans, and 6 types for small cars.

The industry, spread over approximately 670 ropanis of land, had investments from the government, the general public, the Asian Development Bank, Nepal Oil Corporation, Himal Cement, and Nepal Salt Trading, among others. Around 400 people received direct employment in the initial phase.

The industry, which succeeded in fulfilling about 40 percent of the domestic market demand for tires and tubes, competed with foreign products. Tires produced here were exported to South Asian countries including India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Market expansion was achieved by establishing depots in over 30 cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Dharan, Birgunj, and Janakpur.

However, the industry has been completely shut down for the past decade. State assets worth approximately 10 billion rupees and structures spread over hundreds of ropanis are now covered in bushes and weeds. The machinery in the industry is rusted, and the premises appear deserted. Currently, only a few security guards are deployed for security.
