Sri Lanka Clinches Victory Over England in First ODI Thriller

Colombo. Hosts Sri Lanka has made a winning start to the One-Day International series against England. Sri Lanka defeated England by 19 runs in the first match held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a strong total of 271 runs in the stipulated 50 overs. Middle-order mainstay Kusal Mendis contributed an unbeaten 93 runs with an excellent performance for Sri Lanka.

Although openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara gave the team a good start with a 50-run partnership, they were dismissed for 21 and 27 runs, respectively. With Dhananjaya de Silva and Captain Charith Asalanka failing to score significantly, Janith Liyanage provided strong support to Mendis by scoring 46 runs.

Finally, Dunith Wellalage hit an explosive 25 runs off just 12 balls, helping Sri Lanka reach a respectable score. For England, Adil Rashid took 3 wickets, while Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, and Rehan Ahmed took 1 wicket each.

However, chasing a target of 272 runs, England was bowled out for 252. Despite early setbacks, Ben Duckett and Joe Root built a century partnership to drive the team towards victory. After Duckett (62) and Root (61) were dismissed, England's batting collapsed.

Captain Harry Brook was restricted to 6 runs and Jos Buttler to 19, rendering the middle order completely ineffective. Towards the end, Rehan Ahmed (27) and Jamie Overton (34) attempted to guide the team to victory but were unsuccessful.

Sri Lankan bowler Pramod Madushan conceded 39 runs for his 3 wickets. Spinners Dunith Wellalage and Jeffrey Vandersay took 2 wickets each. Wellalage, who delivered an all-round performance, was declared the 'Player of the Match'.

England, currently touring Sri Lanka in preparation for the T20 World Cup, will play the second ODI on January 24. Following the three-match ODI series, the two teams are also scheduled to play a three-match T20 series.
