70 per cent election-related works completed: Commission

Kathmandu, Dec 16: Ram Prasad Bhandari, Acting Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), mentioned that 70 per cent of the work related to the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election has been completed.

The interim government led by Sushila Karki is mandated to hold HoR election on March 5, 2026.

In a discussion organized by the Commission with ministers here on Tuesday, Acting Chief Commissioner Bhandari shared that the Commission has been working with a determination since the announcement of the election date and vowed to do so.

"So far, around 70 per cent of the works related to the election has been completed. The environment for election is being created across the country," informed Bhandari.

"There is no alternative to conducting election by fulfilling certain procedures and we are committed to hold the election," he observed.

According to him, the Commission, a constitutional body responsible to conduct and monitor election, has been receiving 2 to four memorandum every day, demanding revising the electoral laws and process.

He emphasized the need to amend the laws and regulations related to the Commission and make it timely.

When Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel raised query regarding controlling election-related expenses, Bhandari said that the Commission was aware about efficient spending during the election.

Bhandari articulated readiness of the Commission towards addressing the concerns related to controlling expenses during the election.

"We will manage the fund from the State coffers in a very cost-effective manner. We have already demonstrated this frugal approach in the last two parliamentary elections held in 2079 BS," he reminded.

He pledged to strictly cap the limits for the candidates and political parties running for the election.

As for the provision for limiting expenses of the candidates contesting election, he explained that expenses will be determined based on the geography of the candidates' and the number of the voters in the constituency.
