Police urge for safety rules for citizens during Tihar festival
Kathmandu, Oct 15: The public has been urged to immediately report any suspicious or unwanted incidents occurring in their homes or communities during the Tihar festival. Issuing a public notice today, the District Police Range, Kathmandu, called on all citizens to celebrate the festival in a cheerful and responsible manner. It encouraged people to contact the police control room at number 100 if they witness any untoward activities in their homes or neighbourhoods. The police have advised the public to observe Deusi Bhailo programmes only in familiar areas and in a decent and respectful manner. Citizens are requested to report any gambling or playing card games taking place in their localities. The notice also strictly warns against letting off firecrackers during the festival, stating that violators could face up to three years in jail and a fine of Rs. 30,000, in accordance with the Civil Code 2074 BS (2017).
Similarly, the public has been urged to refrain from drunk driving, as well as the consumption of alcohol and tobacco products in public spaces. People are encouraged to store their cash, valuable electronics, and jewelry in bank lockers, use digital financial transactions where possible, and report any instances of drug trafficking, storage, or sale to the police. Additional safety precautions advised include: avoiding traveling on the roofs of buses, not accepting food from strangers while traveling, and not opening the house door to unknown individuals. Likewise, citizens have been urged to install emergency sirens and CCTV cameras in homes, neighbourhoods, and communities. If anyone receives a threatening phone call, they are advised to record the call if possible and report the phone number to the police. Citizens planning to leave their homes for an extended period during the festival are encouraged to inform a trusted neighbour or the nearby police post. Furthermore, the public is advised not to share travel plans on social media during the festival period.
