WHO Suspends Sheikh Hasina’s Daughter Amid Corruption Allegations
The World Health Organization (WHO) has put Saima Wazed, daughter of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, on leave. The move comes as she faces serious allegations of corruption, fraud, and abuse of power in Bangladesh.
WHO has not publicly explained the reason for her leave, simply confirming that Dr. Katharina Boehme will assume her responsibilities as Acting Regional Director starting July 15 in New Delhi.
Responding to the development, Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Bangladesh’s interim advisors, welcomed the decision as “an important first step toward accountability” and pointed to the ongoing investigation into the allegations against Wazed.
The organization declined to comment further on the matter.
